RuneScape board game and tabletop RPG game available in 2022
The RuneScape board game and the tabletop RPG game are on the way, and they are both looking forward to launch in 2022.
Developed by Steamforged Games (the company behind customization such as the Horizon Zero Dawn board game) in collaboration with RuneScape creator Jagex, the RuneScape board game will hit Kickstarter later this year. Meanwhile, RuneScape's RPG tablet goes straight to retail and is compatible with the current D&D edition. This means it will play well with the best Dungeons & Dragons books so you can use these rules in your home games.
We don't know much about both projects yet, but both are deeply entrenched in the fantasy world of Runescape, Gielinor. With an official press release stating that they are offering "fresh but faithful adaptations of classic quests and characters," it looks like players will revisit the fan-favorite RuneScape missions from the brand's 21-year history. They will also be able to "create and improve equipment, retrain their characters, cook special recipes, interact with NPCs and test their skills while exploring different regions of the world."
Based on a quote from Jagex CEO Phil Mansell, miniatures should also be part of the experience. In particular, Mansell noted: "RuneScape and Old School RuneScape players will be excited to get the planned miniatures to create their own adventures with other 'Scappers and board players.'
As for the RuneScape TRPG, it is a "richly illustrated" hardcover volume that allows players to create characters that will travel through Gielinor. Dungeon Masters can also use the rules to create their own quests.
Interestingly, the RuneScape RPG tablet is referred to as the "entry-level book". This would suggest - or at least give a clue - that more is on the way.
There is surely a ton of inspiration to draw from. RuneScape has grown strongly since 2001, growing out of humble roots in one of the biggest MMOs in the world. While it has since been updated with improved graphics, there is also an "Old School" version that brings the game back to its original polygonal look. These table top accessories continue Benjamin Button's game as they scroll to pen and paper adventures.
With the addition of these two RuneScape projects, it's going to be a busy year for Steamforged and video game board games. In addition to these projects, the studio is also releasing the Monster Hunter World board game and hinted in a deleted blog post that a Sea of ??Thieves adaptation may be coming in the near future.
