Elden Ring: How to Survive Limgrave's Terrifying Lesser Runebears
For many players, Runebears are more terrifying than remembrance encounters - and surprisingly, the rewards rarely justify the danger. Still, understanding how these monsters work can turn a nightmare fight into an easy victory.
Why Lesser Runebears Feel Overpowered
The fear surrounding Runebears is not exaggerated. Their moveset is designed to punish hesitation and panic rolling.
The Blind Spot Charge
One of their most dangerous attacks is the sudden forward charge. It activates almost instantly with barely any warning, making reaction dodges extremely difficult. Players caught healing or backing away are often flattened immediately.
Endless Combo Pressure
Unlike many enemies in Elden Ring, Runebears rarely stop attacking. Their swipes, slams, and lunges chain together so aggressively that it feels like they have infinite stamina.
This relentless pressure overwhelms cautious players who try to create distance.
Tiny Rune Rewards
Perhaps the cruelest joke is the reward itself. Despite their enormous health pools and dangerous attacks, Lesser Runebears usually drop only a small number of runes. Many players believe this was intentionally designed by the developers as a troll encounter.
How to Beat Runebears Easily
Fortunately, these terrifying beasts have several major weaknesses.
Roll Into the Belly
The biggest mistake players make is rolling backward. This usually places you directly in range of their extended attacks.
Instead:
Roll forward
Move slightly to the right
Stay close to the stomach and legs
Surprisingly, many claw swipes completely miss targets positioned underneath the Runebear.
Use Sleep for Free Damage
Runebears are extremely vulnerable to sleep effects.
Excellent tools include:
St. Trina's Pot
Sword of St. Trina
A single sleep proc can completely disable the enemy, giving you time for a devastating critical hit.
Break Their Posture Fast
Heavy attacks are highly effective against Runebears.
Strong options include:
Jumping heavy attacks
The Square Off Ash of War
Colossal weapons
Repeated posture damage can stagger the beast quickly and create large openings.
The Secret Counter: Beast-Repellent Torch
One of the easiest counters in the entire game is the Beast-Repellent Torch, sold by the Isolated Merchant in Dragonbarrow.
When equipped:
Regular Lesser Runebears become passive
They ignore you unless attacked first
Exploration becomes dramatically safer
For players exploring dangerous forests or caves, this torch is an absolute lifesaver.
Fear the Bear - But Fight Smarter
The Lesser Runebears of Elden Ring are designed to intimidate players through aggression and raw power. But with smart positioning, sleep effects, and posture-breaking tactics, even these nightmare creatures can be brought down with cheap Elden Ring Runes confidence.
