What You Can Do With RS Gold
Gold is the primary currency within both RuneScape 3 and Old School RuneScape. The only other ‘currency’ that players will talk about is Platinum Tokens. Platinum Tokens, however, is just a 1,000 denomination of gold, allowing easier trading as historically the trading limit for an item has been in quantities of 2 billion.
RuneScape Gold can be used for various purposes and it’s open-ended. You can do whatever you’d like with it. For example, some players even hire other players to run essence to them at places like the abyss, which allows them to get more experience by crafting more runes per hour, and potentially more profit per hour as they’re able to create more runes to sell.
Various skills such as Prayer and Construction in Old School RuneScape essentially solely exist as gold sinks within the game. You cannot really generate any profit by leveling up these skills through any method you choose, the only way to not go negative in gold expenditure is to simply collect the materials yourself… but who has the time to collect tens of thousands of dragon bones themselves, especially if they’re currently at a lower Prayer level? That’s why gold is such a useful currency. Skills such as Summoning and others within RuneScape also parallel this gold sink skills concept.
Therefore, for skilling, being able to use gold to buy supplies is incredibly useful. You’ll typically have access to higher experience methods if you’re able to invest supplies towards that skill.
If you enjoy bossing, whether something like Raids 2, Inferno, or perhaps something like Vorkath to gather more gold, having gold is an important requirement to start with. Without enough gold, you won’t be able to have access to strong enough combat gear and supplies to fight these bosses initially, regardless of your levels. That is unless you’re an Ironman and wish to craft everything within the game yourself, and most players aren’t Ironmen.
Another interesting, but more unconventional thing you can do with gold is something called flipping. This means that you attempt to buy items(For example: OSRS Fire cape, Twisted Bow, gloves, etc.) at lower prices than they’re worth and resell them for higher prices, taking advantage of impatient sellers coupled with impatient buyers of that particular item. With a large amount of starting gold, you can more successfully and efficiently flip items that are higher value, and that involves less effort, as you simply wait for offers to go through. If you aren’t able to purchase the item below its market value, then you incur no losses, as the offer won’t go through and the Grand Exchange has no taxes or fees attached to any offer.
