Ore mining in Valheim
The progress in crafting new items and the progression through the ages in Valheim is well tied to the biomes you encounter and the bosses within them. This makes the game rewarding in a simple way. By defeating a boss, you gain access to items or tools that will help you in the next biome and prepare you for the next boss. It's a good idea to prepare in advance to know where to mine and how to mine some ores. Here's a little help to get you started with a quick guide to mining Valheim.
Mining Copper and Tin
The first ores you will obtain are copper and tin. If you defeat Eikthyr, you will be rewarded with Hard Antler. This resource can be used to make an antler pickaxe. Once you have the pickaxe, head to the Darkwood biome and look for large rocks with copper veins running through them.
Tin can also be found in dark woods, although it is closer to the coast and the ore deposits are much smaller. They have a dark silvery color with a few lighter silver stripes. In Valheim, bronze bars with copper and tin can be produced. To make ingots you need a smelter and then a blacksmith to make bronze items.
Mining iron
Another source of ore to use is scrap metal. It can be found in a swamp biome, usually in underground crypts among piles of muddy scrap metal. However, scrap can also be found in chests in crypts. The scrap metal can then be smelted into iron ingots using a smelting furnace, which allows the production of ferrous objects. The antler pickaxe and the bronze pickaxe work on mining scrap.
Mining Silver
The next step on your mining journey in Valheim will be silver. This site of ore is located in the mountain biome, while silver deposits can be found above the ground, it is rare, most of it is below. To find the deposits you need a rocker, which is the reward for beating the Bonemass. When you find a silver deposit, you can start mining it with an iron pickaxe or better. Again, your silver ore can be converted into silver bars at the smelter. You can create silver items with craft silver bars.
Black metal
Black metal has no Valheim ore as it can only be found as a drop from Fuling mobs. Consequently, no mining is required to collect them. Fulings can only be found in the Plains biome, but after defeating Yugluth, they will start to appear in the Meadows and Black Forest. To turn black metal crumbs into black metal bars, you need to build a blast furnace.
Mining Obsidian
Obsidian is another ore found in the mountain biome. However, unlike silver, it appears above the ground and is found in small black rocks. To mine obsidian you need to use an iron pickaxe or better.
Mining Flametal
Finally, the Flame Metal Ore is found in the Ashlands biome and also requires the use of an iron pickaxe to mine and can be mined from piles of glowing metal ore. They look like small volcanic rocks. After mining, you can turn ore into billets of flames with the blast furnace.
This is just a short guide to Valheim mining, but should be enough to get you started and point you in a specific direction to follow.
