NBA 2K22 brings a huge improvement to the soundtrack
Every year, players who launch the latest sports games are greeted with the best music at the time of the game's release. However, the combination of a steady soundtrack and the speed with which the music industry moves often causes music for games like NBA 2K and Madden to age fairly quickly. 2K Sports is aware of this and will now be actively addressing it in NBA 2K each year to coincide with the start of the new season, starting with NBA 2K22.
2K Sports made it known as part of an updated 2K Beats show in which 2K VP of Marketing Alfie Brody said it would feature a mix of popular and emerging music artists. Some of the names that have been confirmed to be 2K Beats artists in NBA 2K22 include NAS, The Game, Travis Scott, Young Thug, Megan Thee Stallion, Saweetie, and Doja Cat, among others. More famous names have also been mocked as part of the soundtrack to the 2K Beats launch, which will be announced ahead of the launch of NBA 2K22.
The most important change, however, is what Brody describes as a "dynamic soundtrack" that players can enjoy in the future. Brody said on the first Friday of the new season that the NBA soundtrack would be updated with new songs to take advantage of some of the hottest artists of the time. Taking it a step further, emerging producers can also drop their own beats so the gaming community can get to them by adding vocals and remixing beats.
2K Sports's decision was made after years of sports gaming suffering from rapidly aging soundtracks in an ever-changing music industry. Not that many soundtrack artists lack stamina, but many of the singles featured may have fallen out of the public eye just weeks after the game's release.
The introduction of the "dynamic soundtrack" helps highlight the NBA 2K franchise's place in pop culture and how it can be an easy source of exposure for artists by the game's vast community. 2K Sports previously spoke of NBA 2K21, which reaches over 2 million players a day at certain times and sells over 10 million copies. Such a huge community can appeal to many famous names and emerging artists to turn to 2K Sports to engage in the game and possibly even debut new songs that could become the next hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
NBA 2K22 is currently scheduled for September 10, 2021 for Apple Arcade, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S / X.
